Stray dogs trapped in cage installed by forest officials to catch leopard

Three stray dogs were trapped in one of the four cages installed by the Forest Department to catch leopards in the Valsad Nagar Palika area on Sunday. While the dogs were released, officials are still on the lookout for the female leopard. This is the second time that such an incident has been reported in days. A couple of days ago, a stray dog was trapped in the same cage and was released by forest officials.

A leopard was spotted in CCTV footage, said officials concerned, outside the row of houses in the Mograwadi area in the Valsad Nagar Palika area on June 12. The leopard was spotted for three consecutive days in CCTV cameras at different locations. There’s an agricultural field in the nearby area that has standing crops of sugarcane and mango orchards believed to be the hiding spot for the big cats. After the leopard was spotted, locals were scared to move out of their homes once darkness fell, officials said.

Locals reported the incident to the Valsad North Division Forest Range office and requested officials to install cages to catch the leopard.

On June 12, after observing the CCTV footage and pugmarks, officials installed four cages and kept a hen as bait. The cages were covered with tree branches.

On Sunday, locals heard dogs barking and found stray dogs trapped in the cages. “We installed four cages — one each in Mograwadi and Nanakwada and two in Tharwada. The distance between two cages in the Tharwada area is 1.5 km. The female leopard was spotted with two cubs and they are seemingly hiding in the nearby area. We are continuously keeping a watch in the area, including by means of foot patrolling by our staffers so that the leopard can be caught,” Valsad Deputy Conservator of Forest Nisha Raj said.

Meanwhile, Range Forest officer Pradeep Vaghela said, “This is the second time three stray dogs were caught in the cage at Mograwadi. A couple of days ago, a stray dog was caught in the cage. We are also planning to install one more cage to catch the female leopard. Locals here feed the stray dogs”
